Examples of developmental editing

Developmental editing can be a subtle or a severe process depending on the quality of the original draft and the intended audience for the final copy. The two examples shown here lie towards each end of this spectrum. In the first example the original drafts, although written by German-speaking authors, were of a high linguistic standard.  The editing process was directed more towards uniting the style of different authors and making the technical message as clear as possible.

The second example is taken from the output of an automatic translation program translating from Swiss German to English. As a result the standard of the English is low, and sometimes humorous. The subject is an extract from a technical treatise on electrical master-slave clock systems. Click on the links to see samples of text both before and after editing.
